After several people had lost their lives getting caught on the beach at low tide, it was decided by the powers that be to install ropes hanging down from the cliffs to the beach to afford anyone a escape from fast incoming tides...

"It took us most of the day to carry the ropes around. Then a group on top dropped smaller ropes over and pulled the larger ropes up and staked them. It was easier to carry the big ropes over the rocks then through the tundra. I don't know if the ropes saved any lives but at least they were there..." Harold 1958=1959

I arrived Dec 59 and there was not much to them left. They weathered very quickly and were not maintained. A geologist died on the beach in 1962 or 1963 so I don't think any more were put up after I left ....Armand
